The South Brunswick Island Trail

A Day of Shopping, Eating and Beaching Your Way Through Coastal North Carolina

Andrew Fox 012
Many Horry County residents are unaware of the gems that can be found just north of our state line in our sister communities of the South Brunswick Islands.  A plethora of shopping, restaurants and businesses are members of the Little River Chamber of Commerce as they value the support that our residents and visitors provide them.  It is the Little River Chamber's pleasure to help our Chamber members in North Carolina by creating this special link giving you information and direction on how to travel the South Brunswick Island Trail.  Be a trailblazer and be sure when you visit our members' establishments that you mention to them that you found them through the Little River Chamber of Commerce website.

As you head north on Hwy 17, just past the Little River Medical Center, you will see the fork to the right for Calabash and Hwy 179.  Calabash is well known for it's "Calabash-style" seafood which you can find a number of restaurants along the Calabash River.  Additionally, there are a number of gift shops providing an infinite variety of nautical, beach and tropical style gifts, home accessories and t-shirts galore.

Follow the trail to Sunset Beach where you will see outstanding intracoastal waterway homes overlooking serene marshes, lush rolling golf course terrain and the intracoastal waterway.  The South Brunswick barrier islands, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach are unique in that they all face south and thus have the advantage of watching both sunrise and sunset over the Atlantic each day.  You may wish to take a little time out during your visit to take a walk and enjoy these wide sandy beaches.

Ocean Isle Beach offers a wide variety of specialty shops and consignment shops along with quaint restaurants and diners.   If you are in to thrifting, Ocean Isle is the place to visit.  Continue on Rte 179/Beach Drive to Shallotte, the big city of the South Brunswick Islands.  Here, you will find the larger retail stores and more specialty shops, consignment shops and restaurants.  Highway 130 in the heart of Shallotte will take you to Holden Beach, just 20 minutes to the final barrier island in South Brunswick County.

We hope you enjoyed your day traveling the South Brunswick Islands Trail and visiting all of the fine shopping and eating establishments along the way.  Either via Hwy 179 or Hwy 17S you can return to South Carolina knowing you've shopped 'til dropped, ate 'til your stuffed and saw some of the most beautiful areas of coastal North Carolina.
